How Now Brown Cow?

Many of us grew up with Tillamook Brown Cow Ice Cream. We remember the show-stopping flurry of chocolate flakes surrounded by both white chocolate and milk chocolate ice cream… Well, you’ll be happy to know that Tillamook Brown Cow Ice Cream is still here, just under a new name: Tillamook Udderly Chocolate Ice Cream! It’s made with the exact same recipe; the only thing that’s different is the name. We voluntarily changed the name in January 2005 because we learned that it was already in use by another company. We figured as long as it tasted the same, what’s the harm in calling it something different?

My dearest Brown Cow,

You will certainly remain so always and forever in my heat. Why this unnamed "other company" has taken this offense against you, I do not know. I have to say, I think there was a horrible mistake made in your renaming... "Udderly Chocolate"? A fool would get the pun... But should we? It seems to bring unpleasant images to mind when all I am trying to do is enjoy a bowl of my favorite ice cream. But alas... we can't have it all and as they say, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Tillamook, I love you still.

Yours truly,

Hi Rebecca. Happy to hear that even with a new name you still enjoy Tillamook Udderly Chocolate Ice Cream. Just remember, it’s the exact same recipe as before!

I like the chocolate flakes instead of the chunks. It makes the ice cream smoother.

I visited the Tillamook factory today and mistakenly ordered 'Brown Cow'. I was informed that the flavor is no longer made and Udderly Chocolate was the replacement. "No problem"., I said. "They are the same". The Gal at the register (upstairs) says "No, they are not...Udderly Chocolate does not have chocolate pieces shaped like cows". I laughed as I thought she was joking. She seemed offended and confident that the chocolate pieces in Brown Cow had actually been shaped like little cows. I must have missed out on those little cows all those years.

Hi Holly,

Thank you for your comment! I'm so sorry to hear about that! You are correct, Brown Cow did not have little chocolate cows in it, it had chocolate flakes just like Udderly Chocolate has now. I think the employee that you spoke to was probably just getting Brown Cow mixed up with Sweet Centennial or Udderly Peanut Butterly, both of which had little chocolate cows mixed in! I apologize for the confusion!

All the best,

I must say that I was really excited to find out that Brown Cow had only really undergone a name change. My wife was looking for it every time we went to the store. She remembered Brown Cow from her childhood and really wanted to have some again because it brought back memories for her. Thank you for renaming it and not getting rid of Brown Cow. The happiness and enjoyment my wife had while having a dish was great to watch. Keep on making all of the amazing products at Tillamook we are always going to be consumers of your high quality products. Thanks.

Hi Annie,

You definitely have to be devoted to dairy to have a cheese tattoo, but we fully support it! We're thrilled to hear we are helping keep your family traditions alive, and hope your daughter loves visiting us as much as you did. See you soon!

All the best,

Sierra, of the Tillamook team

P.S. Maybe an ice cream tattoo next...?
