1957 Miss USA Charlotte Sheffield
Sure, the royal newlyweds made their first official visit to the U.S. and gobs of people had their brush with royalty, but Tillamook cheese had its own brush with royalty with none other than the reigning Miss USA…of 1957.
Let’s set the “Wayback Machine” to March 1958. Safeway and Tillamook co-sponsored a large-scale promotional program to bring the reigning Miss USA, Charlotte Sheffield, to Portland-area Safeway stores to promote Tillamook cheese. Her visit lasted three days and was full of radio, television and in-store visits. She was a good sport. In this photo, she’s just hanging out on the wing of the airplane.
Well, there was one other brush with royalty, when Tillamook cheese was sent to Buckingham Palace in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s 25th year on the throne, but that’s another story….
