What’s the Difference Between Aged Cheddar Cheese and American Cheese?

Tillamook Medium Cheddar Slices

One of life’s greatest questions…Let’s take a closer look!

American cheese is a processed cheese. It has varying amounts of natural cheese included in it that are all heated to a molten mass and mixed with varying levels of preservatives, emulsifier salts, artificial flavors/colors, and trans-fats. Depending on the desired end use, the melted mixture is then reformed and packaged into blocks, slices, tubs, jars, or spray cans. It originally came from Switzerland!

Aged cheddar cheese is a natural cheese. It’s made of milk, salt, rennet, and sometimes a coloring agent is added (because for one reason or another people prefer it yellow). It had its origins in Cheddar, England. Award-winning Tillamook Cheddar Cheese is different than many other cheddars because it’s made of all-natural ingredients, is always naturally aged for at least 60 days to get that genuine “cheddar” flavor, is made without artificial growth hormones*, and every batch is tested by the Tillamook Sensory Team to ensure it’s of the highest quality.

*The FDA has stated that no significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST and non-rBST treated cows.
