Tillamook Test Kitchen: Savory Ice Cream Toppings
When I scoop up a bowl of Tillamook Ice Cream and am looking for a few fun toppings to throw on top, I usually go for the sweet stuff. Chocolate and caramel sauce, sprinkles, and whipped cream to name a few. However, savory toppings are becoming more and more popular. With that in mind, I got a carton of Old-Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream and set out to test some fun and unique savory ice cream toppings.
Test 1: Potato chips
And not just any chips Kettle Backyard BBQ potato chips. If you like potato chips, you’ll like them even more on top of ice cream!
Test 2: Orange mint & orange champagne vinegar
Do you love vinegar? Really, really love vinegar? Then you might just love this combo as well! The cool mint and tart vinegar provide a unique combination that’s delicious, but off the beaten path.
Test 3: Radish & sea salt
I wasn’t sure about this one at first, but the bite of the radish and salt against the creamy ice cream was pretty good! Just make sure and use a nice and spicy radish to get the right contrast.
Test 4: Coconut milk & basil
This is a dreamy combination. The smooth unsweetened coconut milk with bits of basil throughout… all I have to say is “yum!”
Test 5: Truffle salt
What’s not to like about truffle salt? It’s good on its own, but when you add it to ice cream, it just might get even better.
Test 6: Olive oil & sea salt
For those of you looking for a mellow, smooth topping with a salty twist, this is a yummy ice cream topping. Just make sure to use high-quality olive oil!
Test results: I would love to have any of these savory ice cream toppings again, but I do have a few tips…If vinegar is involved, you need to love it and don’t be surprise if it makes the ice cream curdle after sitting for a while. For toppings that include salt or olive oil, quality and quantity matter! Use high-quality ingredients that will complement the ice cream and beware of the amount you’re using. Using too little salt can impact the flavor and experience just as much as not using enough. My favorite savory topping was test 4, coconut milk and basil. The sweetness of the ice cream combined with the smooth coconut milk and the fragrant basil was amazing!
