There’s a New Sundae in Town

The classic combination of cold, tasty ice cream and hot fudge is pretty decadent. Add a cherry on top and you just seal the deal! So when it’s time to host a summer party you can’t go wrong with an ice cream sundae bar. Your guests get to make it exactly how they like it with their own sundae toppings, and everyone has a good time in the process. That sounds like a win-win to me!

So how do you surprise your guests with something they aren’t expecting? It’s all in the sundae toppings. Sure, you’ll want the classic Tillamook Ice Cream, hot fudge, nuts, whipped cream, and loads of cherries – but what about these other ideas:

- Bacon flakes – These days it’s fashionable to put bacon on everything, but let’s face it, it’s delicious!
- Chocolate-covered espresso beans – It’s the sundae version of an Italian affogato.
- Toasted coconut – There’s something nice about adding in a little crunch with a tropical twist.
- Meringue bites – They’re simple because you can buy them at the store but everyone will think you have the fanciest sundae bar in town.
- Pretzels – Something salty with something sweet. It’s a combination that just plain works.
- Salt and caramel – Like bacon, it’s on every dessert menu these days for a reason. It just makes you want to say “yum!”
- Cinnamon and chili – These two spices are perfect with chocolate and will add a kick no one is expecting.

This is just a list of some of my ideas on how to make a sundae bar like no one has seen before. What are some of the craziest sundae toppings you’ve tried?

World’s Largest Ice Cream Sundae

Who doesn’t love an ice cream sundae? With all that hot fudge running over the cold sweet ice cream and a cherry on top to boot, it’s no wonder people have been trying to make the world’s largest sundae for decades!

In 1963 these cute Little Miss Universe contestants devoured a gigantic floating sundae while swimming in a pool. Swimming while eating? Didn’t our mothers tell us never to do that?

Ever since then, the sundaes have been getting bigger and bigger. According to Guinness World Records, the world’s longest ice cream sundae was set in Wyandotte, Kansas. It featured over 275 pounds of ice cream, 30 pounds of chocolate syrup, and 12 pounds of cherries. That sure could feed a lot of ice cream lovers!

Here at Tillamook, we may not have a sundae half the length of a football field but we do our best to help you compete! If you’re feeling up to the challenge, try the Tillamook Ice Cream Adventure. With one scoop of every single Tillamook Ice Cream flavor and a flag on top, you’re sure to satisfy everyone’s ice cream tastes. For a little inside “scoop,” upon ordering you’ll be serenaded with a special song. Let the sundae feasting begin!

Memorial Day Sundae Bar

Tillamook Sticky Bun Ice Cream Sundae - A fun (and delicious) Memorial Day weekend treat!

Last year, a friend introduced me to Tillamook Sticky Bun Ice Cream. My freezer now has a special place reserved just for this amazingly tasty gallon of ice cream. It tastes like the middles of sticky buns all mixed inside Tillamook’s already delicious ice cream! I get giddy just thinking about it.

I knew the kids would love making their own sundaes (as would I!) so I assembled all the toppings and grabbed my favorite Sticky Bun Ice Cream from its place of honor in the freezer and let them have at it.

Toppings: cherries, whipped cream, caramel sauce, candied pecans, and rolled wafers

By the time they finished sampling the toppings, and then adding a ridiculous amount to their own dishes, the ice cream had almost completely melted but they didn’t mind. They loved their “ice cream soup”.

My daughter enjoying her sundae!

I’d love to hear your ideas for other toppings for Sticky Bun Ice Cream, and also other topping/ice cream combos with your favorite Tillamook ice cream. A friend suggested caramelized bananas which would be incredible with Sticky Bun Ice Cream! So stock up your sundae bar for the weekend.  It will be sure to put a cherry on top of your Memorial Day celebration.
